Parish breakfasts are back!

by Brian Tumulty

An estimated 285 parishioners attended the first parish breakfast of our fraternal year after the Sunday morning Masses on September 17. The crowd after the 10:45 a.m. Mass was our largest at 150 people, surpassing the 100 or so who attended after the 9 a.m. Mass.

Our kitchen crew got going at 6:30 a.m., preparing for the first wave of about 35 people who attended after the 7:30 a.m. Mass. Three Knights who stayed in the kitchen for the duration were (left to right below) Michael Jackson, Patrick Meere, and Victor Karl. Brother Knights helping with setup and service included Mike DePorter, Peter Grau, Dick Wadden, Patrick Hill, PGK Brian Tumulty, and Grand Knight Anthony Estrada.

Anthony made a trip to Wegman’s during breakfast because we were running out of coffee cups.

The St. Timothy Knights of Columbus received $841 in generous donations that covered our expenses.

Unlike many other councils that charge a preset fee for their meal, our council does not turn away those unable to pay. Instead, we rely on the generosity of our parishioners who voluntarily determine whether to put cash or coins into the donation jar.

In addition, we do not do a “pancake breakfast.” We offer an omelet bar in addition to our breakfast staples of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, and mixed fruit.

Longtime members remember Brother Knight Roton Rosario who manned the omelet bar for many years dating back to the early years of this millennium. But for at least the last decade, it’s been Mark Zuharanek, who served as our grand knight in the recently completed 2022-23 fraternal year. His T-shirt, in case you are interested, says that he lived in the past because it’s cheaper there.

For our September breakfast, we offered French Toast instead of pancakes, with Carolyn Yehl, a former teacher at St. Timothy School, assisted by her husband, the former Grand Knight Tom Yehl.
